ABOUT the Photographer

I was born and raised in California, attending San Pasqual and La Sierra elementary schools and La Sierra Academy. I graduated from Gem State Academy (Idaho) in 1988.

I then studied at Walla Walla College (Washington), leaving there with undergraduate (B.S., Biology, 1992) and graduate degrees (M.S., Biology, 1994), as well as a wife -- Laura, a USAF officer.

Laura's post-graduate training in California was followed by Air Force tours at Keesler AFB (Mississippi), Mtn Home AFB (Idaho) and Elmendorf AFB (Alaska). We anticipate staying in southcentral Alaska when our current tour of duty ends. We and our two children have found too much to enjoy in Alaska to want to leave any time soon!

I have worked in a medical research lab at Loma Linda University in California, and on offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico studying bird migration for Louisiana State University. I have been a stay-at-home Dad since 2000. I'm also an active independent hummingbird researcher and have a federal permit to band and study hummingbirds and other passerines in several states.

Christian education and wildlife conservation organizations remain close to my heart. I've served on the school board for Desert View Christian School (Idaho), the K-12 Board of Education for the Idaho Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and on the board of directors for San Bernardino Valley Audubon (California) and Mississippi Coast Audubon societies. I am currently webmaster for the Idaho Bird Records Committee and moderator of a forum for the Hummingbird Research Group.

I have been taking photographs for many years but never really got serious about business potential until my brother-in-law, fellow photographer and mentor Eddie Fisher, moved to Alaska in the summer of 2006 -- and then sold me his "old" Canon 20D.

I've presented my early pictures in slideshows for churches, schools, research organizations, and nature clubs in Mississippi, California, Idaho, Texas, and Alaska. My photos have also graced the covers of nature DVDs produced by Avian Video Center.

If that all wasn't enough to keep me busy, I also enjoy fishing, birding and alpine skiing. I'm a member of National Ski Patrol and am currently working on full certification in Outdoor Emergency Care.
